Discipline isn't about punishment but about teaching, and when it comes to serious behaviors, individualized care becomes even more critical. Balancing increased structure with increased nurture creates the optimal environment for helping children learn from their mistakes and grow.

• Each child has different needs, and fair treatment means responding to individual needs rather than identical treatment
• The "piggy bank" concept shows how positive interactions deposit emotional currency while discipline makes withdrawals
• Structure and nurture must increase together when dealing with serious behaviors
• Grounding should focus on bringing children closer rather than isolation and typically shouldn't exceed three days
• Restitution and reconciliation are both essential when trust is broken
• Logical consequences should always be reasonable, related to the behavior, and respectful
• Children often act worse around parents because they feel safest expressing their struggles with them
• When children push boundaries, they need connection more than ever
